Save Amazon Rainforest from Devastation
Amazon fire

Brazil is home to the 60 percent of Amazon rainforest also known as the lungs of the earth. Amazon rainforest borders nine countries — Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. It is known for its biodiversity. According to Greenpeace, there are 40,000 plants species, around 400 species of mammals and approximately 1400 different species of insects and birds. Today, this amazing wonder of nature is at risk of deforestation, loss of habitat to its various species of plant, animal, birds and insects worsened by the impact of wildfires.

Amazon rainforest has been burning since 2019 that has ruined approximately 1 million hectare of land. The fires continue to rage in 2020 soaring and destroying the environment and its inhabitants. This precious natural resource is pivotal to curb the impact of climate change as it stabilizes the climate providing food, medicines, water and wood to the region not just the natives. Other threats such as illegal and unsustainable logging, urban infrastructure development, large-scale farming and ranching have magnified the destruction. The Brazilian government is alleged to have turned a blind eye to devastation of the rainforest by dismantling environment protections agencies and repealing legal protection.

If there is a global action to preserve the natural resource, there is hope to reverse climate, ensure regional and global food security and provide clean energy. The post Covid world economy cannot grow without sustaining natural ecosystems. While we all saw nature breathing while the world was under lockdown, severe weather patterns and damaging fires have yet again knocked down environment and biodiversity. Citizens and governments globally have a responsibility to act to this global environmental crisis. The other option would be to ignore and wait for a huge climate catastrophe.

The solutions to preserve Amazon rainforest include tougher actions against mafias who commit violence against those who protect environment which include local communities. Illegal logging and other aforementioned threats should be curbed to ensure preservation of the habitat and maintain security and ensure rights of indigenous people. Governments in the surrounding countries should provide institutional protections by upholding laws and giving powers to agencies that can safeguard the rainforest.
